The following list only contains events and activities confirmed to date. This list will be continually updated as more events and activities are finalised.

Transport and Cover Costs

The Opportunity Area is also offering 50% travel subsidy for schools and settings bringing pupils to attend events.

If you would like to apply for subsidy, please contact events@nybep.org.uk by the 28th of February with estimated travel costs.

There is also capacity for the Opportunity Area to reimburse schools for cover costs for members of teaching staff. Please contact events@nybep.org.uk for more information.

Launch Event

March 5 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

We will have a launch event for Maths Month to coincide with ‘Skipping Day’. Volunteers will be engaging the crowds with maths games and magic tricks as part of ‘maths busking’. We will then have a formal launch event indoors in which Kjartan Poskitt and volunteers from Scarborough 6th Form will perform more maths magic tricks. Sumdog: Maths Competition

As part of the North Yorkshire Coast Maths Month, pupils are invited to practise maths, have fun and compete against other classes to become the North Yorkshire Coast Sumdog Champions! The contest is completely FREE to enter and is a great way to motivate children and encourage teamwork. Play Sumdog in class or set it as homework, it all counts towards the contest! Count-on Baby Goz Story-plays for children aged 3-5

The author and illustrator Steve Weatherill will be running a story-play based on his picture book ‘Count-on Baby Goz’. In these interactive events Steve leads children in acting out the story of Baby Goz with props. This will help children develop counting skills through story-telling and play.

Year 10 Maths Feast 2019

Maths Feast is a fun educational challenge for Year 10 students which tests problem-solving and teamwork skills. Teams of four students will test their maths skills with our all-you-can-eat feast of problems! There are several rounds requiring different skills and strategies for success. Each event takes between two and three hours, and awards will be given for good teamwork and for the winning team of each round.

The Maths Feast is open to students from outside of the Opportunity Area.

Times Tables Rock Stars: Maths Competition

Does your class rock the most? Times Tables Rock Stars are running a rocktastic times tables off between 15th March and 21st March! Each pupil in participating classes will be required to answer multiplication and division questions online. Jen Rogers: Playing for Real

‘Playing for Real – Games, Chance and Money’: Jen Roger's is a research fellow in the Department of Statistics at the University of Oxford. She has appeared as an expert statistician in the TV programmes Long Live Britain and Mystery Map - in which she calculated the chance of dying from spontaneous human combustion!

In this interactive show with plenty of audience involvement,Jen will introduce important ideas from statistics and probability by playing a range of games, some of them featuring money. There will be a chance to win prizes including (maybe) some money.

This event is aimed at Year 12 and 13 students studying STEM subjects. It will also be appropriate for Year 11 students in high-ability math sets.

Year 9 and 10 Maths Inspiration Day

Year 9 and 10 students will have fun gaining valuable experience in problem solving and reasoning strategies. They will develop their knowledge of post-16 qualifications and gain an understanding of careers which require strong maths skills. The day will consist of workshops, career talks, a lunchtime quiz and an inspirational speaker.
